Mosquitoes and sand flies…

We are often asked whether there is malaria or dengue fever on Koh Phayam.

According to the local doctor, there are neither.

This is very comforting, but cannot be considered a guarantee.

Dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes who are active in the daytime and malaria by mosquitoes who are active at night.

The number of mosquitos depends entirely on the weather.

When it has not rained for 2 to 3 weeks, it is usually pleasant.

Around dawn, however, the large mosquitoes usually come out.

They are very aggressive and can even bite through clothing.

The only positive thing about these insects is, that according to our doctor, they cannot transmit any diseases.

You should protect yourself with mosquito lotion from half past five to about eight in the evening.

For my little daughter, I use the local mosquito spray (made on Phayam with essential oils).
To have good protection, I always spray it on her pants and T-shirt before I put them on her in the evening.

For very young children I recommend to bring a mosquito lotion from back home.

Essential oils can burn on sensitive baby skin. For my little daughter I had a Mosquito lotion called "Insektenschutz-Schaum", I bought it in Germany. This product is purely herbal and already suitable for children from 6 months old. It worked very good. But it’s not cheap (best to order online).

I can only advise against the mosquito coils (spiral for burning), as they are highly toxic.

And then there are the sand flies.

You don't see them ... you don't feel them, but after about 12-16 hours, usually the next morning, you have terribly itchy bites that often get infected. Unlike mosquito bites, these take much longer to heal. And since you don't notice the sand flies, many people have a lot of bites at once.

There are not always sand flies and not everywhere.

Unfortunately, I cannot give any information about when and where they are, because I don’t know much about these insects. But I've often noticed that they are on the beach, many times near the water, where the sand is still wet from the waves. The best way to protect yourself against sand flies is coconut oil ... but baby oil should also work, or you can protect yourself with a mosquito lotion.

The insects are the size of fruit flies with white wings.

All of our bungalows have mosquito screens at the windows that do not let in mosquitoes or sand flies. Some also have mosquito screen doors. So, if you are careful and don’t let the doors open, you will have no insects in the bungalow. The most important time is shortly before sunset.

For our guests we have an elevated wooden platform directly by the beach.

There you are usually safe from the insects. A nice breeze and the shade from the trees make it the perfect spot to enjoy the beach and the sunset.
